freeMFA is now taking applications. We will be accepting 12 students for 6 months of aesthetic and political investigations, followed by 1 and a half years of individual investigation. Our location will be primarily in downtown Los Angeles.

Why?
There needs to be a new arts education at the masters level
that breaks with the traditional American MFA model of studio work,
teacher critique, portfolio building, and self-marketing to an already
overstuffed gallery system. Since we are taking the profit-making,
self-commodification aspect out of the education, we thought you
shouldn’t have to pay anything for it. Free MFA exists because an
alternative to the cultural and educational deficits found in
traditional graduate art education is needed.
Free MFA is an aesthetic and political colloquium -as- school developed
to be similar to the other free universities that are found all over
the world. It is a collection of artists, scholars, teachers,
activists, curators who lecture, give classes, and hold seminars that
student can participate in as change agents, thinkers, and creators
of art. By participating in the colloquium, student artists gain
intellectual and artistic tools critical to their ability to become
smarter artists and better citizens.
Free MFA is thus an interlude
between academia and practice that will operate for a six-month period
of rigorous education and re/education.
The staff consists of artists, professors, curators, and aestheticians who
participate as volunteers to create a unique environment in which the
teachers and students learn. Free MFA is created by artists,
thinkers, curators who believe in the current push toward
self-education and self-organization. Teachers, students and staff
are peers willing to invest time for this specific social process.
At present, Free MFA is accepting applications for a limited number of
openings from undergraduate students about to finish or who have
finished a BFA program, particularly from the Southern California pool
of art institutes and universities.
FREE MFA will be hosted in Downtown Los Angeles.

FREE MFA is a review of politics and aesthetics underpinned in
modernity focusing on commercial, non-commercial, social politics and
artistic practices.
